Vikas Divyakirti controversy : Court notice on 'IAS vs Judge' video, appearance on July 22 mandatory

Dr. Vikas Divyakirti, founder of the country's famous coaching institute Drishti IAS, is once again in the headlines, but this time the reason is not his teaching style, but a controversial video. The Ajmer court has taken cognizance of the defamation case against him and ordered him to appear in person on July 22.

What is the whole matter?

The matter is related to a viral YouTube video, in which Divyakirti discussed with his students on the topic 'IAS vs Judge: Who is more powerful?' During this, he made some comments about judges, judicial officers and the collegium system, which many lawyers and the judicial community considered insulting and sarcastic.

Complainant advocate Kamlesh Mandoliya alleged that the language used in the video has hurt the dignity and impartiality of the judiciary. The court also prima facie believed that Divyakirti's comments are harmful to the reputation of judicial institutions.

Strict comment of the court

The court of Ajmer Judicial Magistrate Manmohan Chandel said in its nearly 40-page order that,

"The derogatory language used against the judiciary on a public platform with the intention of gaining popularity is not only irresponsible, but it also raises questions on the impartiality and credibility of the justice system."

The court has ordered to register a case under sections 353(2), 356(2), (3) of the Indian Justice Code (BNS) 2023 and section 66A(b) of the IT Act.

Commotion in the education world and students

Dr. Divyakirti is very popular among UPSC aspirants across the country. Her videos and teaching style have been a source of inspiration for millions of youth. But the current controversy has not only affected her image but has also sparked a debate in the coaching industry about whether teachers should be extra cautious while expressing their views on sensitive topics on public forums.

What next?

All eyes are now on July 22, when Dr. Divyakirti has to appear in Ajmer Court. This case can set a precedent not only legally, but also socially and educationally - to what extent things said on public forums demand responsibility and decorum.
