American electric vehicle company Tesla has inaugurated its first showroom in India at Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) in Mumbai. With this showroom open to the general public from July 15, 2025, Tesla has officially entered the Indian market.
In this new showroom, customers will get a chance to experience and test drive Tesla's famous Model Y SUV. The company has imported its vehicles to India in the initial phase, with six Model Ys being sent from Shanghai to Mumbai. The showroom is spread over 4,000 sqft, and customers will get the facility to book, customize and order cars here.
The price of Tesla Model Y in India will start at around Rs 60 lakh. However, due to import duty of up to 70% on fully built vehicles in India, the price is higher than the US, China and Europe. The company plans to hold talks with the government for local production in the future so that prices can be reduced.
Tesla plans to open showrooms in Delhi and Bangalore soon apart from Mumbai. Apart from this, seven Supercharger sites have been marked with the tag "Coming Soon" in Mumbai and Delhi-NCR - which will also strengthen the charging infrastructure.
At present, Tesla is assessing the demand by adopting a retail-first strategy in India. If the market remains positive, the company may consider setting up an assembly plant or gigafactory here in the future.
This move can prove to be a big turning point for the Indian electric vehicle industry, which will not only increase competition but also bring premium EV options to the customers.
