After a long wait, the countrymen have got a big relief. The decision that people were waiting for since August 15 has come out today. A major change has been made in the tax structure in the GST Council meeting.

Now there will be only two slabs in the whole country – 5% and 18%. The time limit of 12% and 28% slabs applicable earlier has been abolished. These rules will come into effect from 22 September 2025.

Items with 0% GST

The council has completely abolished GST on many everyday essential products. Now people will not have to pay any tax on these. This includes food, education and health sectors.

Food and agricultural products

  • UHT (ultra-high temperature) milk
  • Chhena and Paneer (pre-packaged and labeled)
  • Pizza bread
  • Khakhra, chapati, roti
  • Paratha, parotta and other Indian breads

Education related products

  • Erasers
  • Uncoated paper and paperboard
  • Exercise book
  • Graph book
  • Laboratory notebook and other notebooks

Life saving medicines

Earlier 12% GST was levied on these medicines. But now they have been made completely tax free. These include:

  •  Agalsidase Beta
  •  Imiglucerase
  •  Daratumumab (and subcutaneous forms)
  •  Eptacog alfa activated recombinant coagulation factor VIIa
  •  Onasemnogene abeparvovec
  •  Asciminib
  •  Alectinib
  •  Risdiplam
  •  Obinutuzumab
  •  Polatuzumab vedotin
  •  Entrectinib
  •  Atezolizumab
  •  Spesolimab
  •  Velaglucerase Alpha
  •  And many other drugs used in the treatment of cancer and rare diseases.

Big relief for the general public and tribals

These changes will directly impact the pockets of the common people. Everyday expenses will decrease and health services will become affordable. Tribal communities, who need affordable medicines and basic commodities the most, will get the biggest relief.
